For Now
Jake: I remember this track catching my ear right away. The song’s forward motion made me think about time, and although the lyrics have changed quite a few times it’s always been a story about people working their way through life. The woman, the man, you, and me. We’ve all got our own stories, and we’ve all got our own problems, but I think a lot of us hit a point in life where we think, “well, now what?” Let me know if you figure it out.
Dave: Nothing too fancy with this one. The basic chord progression for the verse just kind of showed up one morning while noodling in my office. I just liked it and decided to begin developing it. The idea was to keep it straight forward, but with a forward motion feel, cut back on the layers and other parts. I think I used my AV 59 Strat on the main parts, a very clean and clear sounding instrument. The choruses added the Les Paul Special but all with low gain. The C-section, (middle-8?), was set-up to be as open and relaxed as possible, a counter to the rest of the sections. Jason’s Bass part really emphasized the forward motion feel especially in the C-section to keep things moving while allowing space. It was a really great idea and a bit of an 80’s vibe. That C-section is one of our favorites! As usual, Tim’s drumming serves the song very well and opens up nicely during the verses to give Jake some room. Serving the song is something Tim does very well!
The recording process was pretty standard for us. Cut the rhythm “from the floor” as a three piece and get a keeper drum take. In general, we strive for complete takes opposed to comping multiple takes favoring feel over absolute perfection. I believe we used a click track but were not super strict about it. The rest of the tracks were built around the drums then sent to Jake for comment, ideas. Jake really has a knack for finding the melody that fits with the music, no exception here! He’ll talk about the lyrics separately, but this simple tune is one of our favs. Enjoy!
PS: Jakes acoustic version is a great alternate take on the tune!, be looking for that soon!
Tim: I really liked the feel for this song right from the beginning. Right from the opening chords until the end it rocks
pretty good. My drumming like I always say is pretty basic but true to the song and that's how I tend to write and create my drum parts, nothing more nothing less. We cut all the instruments live from the start and just add or take away parts as we go, it's very easy for me and maybe for everybody else that we gel right away when we have ideas, and it doesn't take long for a song to appear. Very cool how that works. I love playing with these guys. Until next time. Cheers, Timmy P. 😎
